Options comparison

In person, video, or form review?

The format matters less than whether the visit can gather enough information and arrange what cannot happen on a screen.

Compare the routes

Each route can be useful. Each has a point where it stops being enough.

In person

Best suited to a concern that needs a physical exam or local testing. Travel and scheduling can take more effort.

Live video

Allows a direct talk and follow-up questions. A separate lab or in-person exam may still be needed.

Secure form with clinician review

Can work for some care when the questions change with your answers and a clinician can write back to ask more. A form that asks everyone the same questions, with nobody writing back, is not a full assessment.

Checklist

What every route needs

Look past the screen and check the care around it.

  • A real exchange

Guidance from state medical boards says an online visit must meet the same care standard as a room visit.

  • Room for follow-up

An online form can be part of a visit, but a same-for-everyone form with no follow-up questions is not a full assessment.

  • A plan for missing pieces

If a sound check calls for a lab test or a physical exam, guidance from the federation representing state medical boards says the prescriber has to set it up or refer the patient to a clinician able to do it.

  • A state check

As of September 2026, each state sets its own telehealth rules, so the exact path can change with location.

The best route is the one that can answer the medical question in front of it.

Keep moving

One answer at a time is enough.
